This thangka illustrates Buddha Amitabha, the Buddha of Boundless Light, seated upon a lotus throne in his pure realm of Sukhavati (Dewachen). Painted in vibrant cinnabar red, he rests his hands in the Dhyana Mudra (meditation gesture) holding a black begging bowl. He is surrounded by an assembly of Bodhisattvas (including Avalokiteshvara and Vajrapani), celestial multi-tiered palaces, lush wish-granting trees, and reborn souls emerging from lotus blossoms in the lower jeweled pool.
