This masterpiece captures the assembly of Shakyamuni Buddha surrounded by the Sixteen Great Arhats (sthaviras) who vowed to preserve the Dharma. Flanking the central throne are his two foremost disciples, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, holding monk staffs (khakkhara) and alms bowls. The landscape contains the individual arhats engaged in study and meditation, accompanied by Upasaka Dharmatala, the smiling Hva-shang, and the Four Guardian Kings guarding the lower perimeter.
